Thiruvananthapuram : Covid-19 infections in the state are growing by leap and bounds with 608 new cases reported in single-day tally today, said Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at the media briefing on the virus situation in the state. 306 infections were contracted via contact adding to fears of possible community spread. Thiruvananthapuram alone accounted for 201 fresh cases during the day, CM added.
An Alappuzha native who returned from Saudi died from Covid infection during the day. The deceased has been identified as 47-year-old Vaisullah Nazir Usman.
Of the day’s new cases, source of 26 infections remain unknown. The situation is worrisome, said the minister.
130 incomers from abroad contributed to the day’s new tally while 68 cases pertained to people who arrived from states outside.
In quantum jump, 14,227 samples were sent for tests in past 24 hours. 1,80,594 across the state are currently under quarantine of whom 4376 are being monitored in various hospitals.
The total number of covid cases reported since the outbreak now stands at 8930.
